Throughout our lives it is inevitable that we experience many different types of losses. How we deal with these and adapt to the effect they have on our lives determines how we exist.
The loss-Bereavement of someone or something that is close or important to us is often surprising and overwhelming. It can be very painful and can throw our lives in to disarray.
After a significant loss, you may experience a number of emotions, some of which may be unexpected.
These emotions often take us by surprise and we do not know how to cope with them, they change our lives,
losing someone close can often reflect in us losing a part of ourselves.
These unfamiliar feelings can lead to a multitude of emotions such as insomnia, lethargy, numbness, anger, anxiousness, shock and guilt to name just a few. This can often make us question the meaning of our own existence.
Often these feelings are frightening and overwhelming and although they are normal reactions to loss we can feel very alone. Accepting them as part of the grieving process and allowing yourself to feel is an essential part of the healing process.
Every person grieves differently. Grief that is expressed and experienced has the potential to heal and eventually strengthen and enrich our lives.
There is no ‘normal’ or ‘right’ way to grieve. We are all different with individual ways
of coping depending on our life experience, our faith, and the nature of the loss.
The grieving process is hard, but it can help you to accept your loss and to carry on with your life. Failing to grieve or getting stuck at one of the stages of grief can lead to emotional problems, such as depression or even physical illness later on.
While bereavement is probably one of the toughest things you’ll have to face in your life, grief is a part of normal human experience. Most people adjust through this and the experience itself is part of the emotional growth that occurs throughout life.
